Jenny Lind would become a household name long before her arrival in the United States due to PT Barnum's artistry with advertising and the press. A large part of her life was spent living and performing in Germany alongside 19th century greats like Felix Mendelssohn and Giacomo Meyerbeer. Songbooks were published in the United States to show Americans what the previously unknown star was capable of in terms of musicality. Already having a successful career in Europe during the 1840s, Jenny Lind's partnership with Barnum made her a trans-Atlantic sensation.
